Congratulations to Lenora Ridenhour on the birth of her new great grand daughter, Raegan Michell to Jake and Kimberly. Raegan was 8lbs 6ozs and was born at 11:33PM January 15th.

Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17th is the first day of Lent. By the fourth century the Western church had determined that the Lenten period of fasting and renewal should correspond to Christ’s forty-day fast and by counting forty days back from Easter (excluding Sundays, which remain “feast” days), arrived at the Wednesday seven weeks before Easter.  Lent is a general time of penitence and renewal for all Christians and Ash Wednesday became the day that marked the beginning of the Lenten renewal. The aim of Ash Wednesday worship is threefold:
1. To meditate on our mortality, sinfulness, and need of a savior;
2. To renew our commitment to daily repentance in the Lenten season and in all of life;
3. And to remember with confidence and gratitude that Christ has conquered death and sin.
Ash Wednesday worship is a witness to the power and beauty of our union with Christ and to the daily dying and rising with Christ that this entails. In Christ’s passion we see God’s judgment on evil; in our penitence we express sorrow and repentance for our sins; in our rededication we show that we are purified and renewed. The placement of ashes on our foreheads in the “imposition” of a cross is followed by the words, “Consider yourself dead to sin and alive in Jesus Christ.”

Haiti Pill Bottle Collection Ministry
We will put a collection box downstairs for your empty prescription bottles with caps left on. Please remove any labels as these bottles will be collected by Bill Fisher to give to the Summit Civitan Club of Salisbury, NC for their continuing project to the Medical mission in Haiti. These small bottles are needed because they receive their prescriptions only in bulk and the bottles that we throw away will be of great benefit to them in dispensing and storing medications in smaller quantities. The collection box will always be downstairs so that you can bring your bottles anytime you wish. If you would like to know more about this opportunity you can ask Bill Fisher.

Vacation Bible School Was Great Fun this year.
We thank everyone who gave up there week to the Lord in this summer’s VBS. Jesus was shared in creative and meaningful ways. The great food we ate, the songs we learned, the crafts we made, the games we played (especially the balloon toss) and Bible teaching were the best ever!
This year we learned five ways that we can trust God with our lives. God is always with us no matter what happens, that God is powerful and will always do what He says He will do, and that through Christ God gives us life and will always care for us. Because of this we in all things should “Fear Not!” because God will see us through.    Click here to view a slideshow of VBS 2009 memories.
If any one is interested in a VBS Remembered DVD of this years school please see Nicole Boyer. We thank Nicole for making this DVD possible and Jeff Fisher for the pictures shown in the DVD.

We are thankful for our wonderful floral arrangements each Sabbath. They are being arranged by Dana Crawford, Jill Rufty, and Connie Lesslie. If you would like to provide flowers for Sunday worship service in honor of or in memory of a loved one you can do so by contacting Dana Crawford. In addition there is a sign-up sheet downstairs on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall.

Starting this year, 2010, Youth Night will be held on the first Sunday of each month (instead of every-other-Sunday). The remaining Sundays of the month will be Children’s Church.  All youth are invited and encouraged to attend Youth Night. Field trips and different activities are in the planning stages for the future.

After the children's sermon upstairs children 5th grade and down are invited to go downstairs for Children's Church.  For February Children's Church will meet the 14th, 21st, and the 28th.

On the 1st Sunday evening of the month, all youth will meet at 5:30 PM and enjoy a meal (Parents are invited) and then break out into groups at 6:00 PM for Youth Night.  We will finish at 7:00 PM.

“Who you spend the most time with is who you will become the most like.” So as we begin our New Year it’s not too late to begin reading the Bible through in 2009 and to give God a devotional time of prayer each day. Look for the 52 Week Bible Reading Plan as you leave today in the narthex.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”                                                                            Isaiah 52:7
